Hi me again ! On a post Kevin Gallagher made in reply to AndyZ having too much angle on the front of his guitar. Kevin said to lower the tail end of the body a little. Just to make sure I have this clear in my head presummably Kevin was talking about effectively tipping the top back on it's centre axis ? Have I got this right ? Many Thanks Russell. |

No. You only want a 1.5-2 degree angle on the upper bout where the neck is going to meet the body. That is accomplished several ways but not by moving the top around relative to the sides. Careful planing and some minor sanding are usually the method. p.s. I am assuming this is a flat top guitar with no dome sanded into the sides. I haven't read Kevin's response but I think he meant that you could reduce the angle of the upper bout by removing, and thereby shortening the sides overall. In the exteme... by doing that, you could remove enough material that the tail end would be equal in height to the heal end and therefore be level. But the overall depth or height of the guitars' sides would be smaller/less. |

Thanks Dave This was the original post If you were to take more off of the tail end of your rim when your putting the radius on the rim set in preparation for the top installation, you will find that you'll eliminate this problem on your next guitar. I have a powered radius dish machine that spins my dish at relatively low RPM while I can adjust the four support points on the mold in order to allow any quadrant of the rim to be favored during the sanding process and adjust the tilt of the final location of the peak of the parabola that results from the bracing radius and side radius coming together to form the arch. |

By the way I am not arguing with this I am sure Kevin knows a lot more about it than I do, I just want to understand the effect this has asI can't quite figure it out. |

Thanks Michael I think I have it, What Kevin is doing is effectively incresing the angle from the Tail Block to the center point, and thus decreasing the angle from the Neck Block to the center point. I think I have this right ? The reason I am asking about this is, I am trying to come up with a way to ensure I have a consistent !.5 Degree angle on each guitar I make, then when I put the body onto the neck jig I have I can setup to cut my angle and always know I am going to have a good fit all round. Would it be right to say with the neck block set dead upright, an angle of 91.5 % should be present between the front face and the top surface ? |
